Relief for Bengaluru, Mandya as KRS level set to rise

MYSURU/MANDYA/HASSAN/SHIVAMOGGA: Cauvery Niravari Nigam Limited officials and farmers are hopeful of heavy inflows into Krishnarajasagara (KRS) reservoir, thanks to heavy rain in Kodagu district , the catchment area.

On Monday, the water level in KRS reservoir stood at 83.1ft against a maximum of 124.8ft.

Inflow into the dam was 5,654 cusecs, while 6,149 cusecs was released to Tamil Nadu. On July 18, the water level stood at 90.8ft with the release to Tamil Nadu depleting storage levels.

However, overcast sky and intermittent showers across Mandya district have raised hopes of farmers, who have been protesting the release of water to Tamil Nadu. They have warned of a “fierce” agitation if officials do not stop release to the neighbouring state, but now rain in Kodagu could end water woes in the region.

Inflow into Hemavathi reservoir in Gorur, Hassan, has increased sharply thanks to continuous rain in Sakleshpur and Chikkamagaluru regions. About a fortnight ago, inflow into the dam was below 2,000 cusecs. However, it rose to 12,015 cusecs on Monday and is likely to cross 15,000 cusecs over the next few days. Officials are discharging 5,000 cusecs — up from 3,800 cusecs from two days ago. The water level in the dam on Monday stood at 2,894.3ft against a maximum of 2,922ft.

Inflow into the Kabini dam in HD Kote, Mysuru also shot up within the past 12 hours. The inflow was 1,030 cusecs at 6am on Monday, which rose to 7,382 cusecs by end of day. The water level has also increased to 2,275.2ft, up from 2,274.7ft recorded at 6am.
