Road accidents claimed more lives in June-July than in lockdown months in UP's Prayagraj

PRAYAGRAJ: A higher number of road accidents of fatal and non-fatal category were recorded between June and July — when curbs were eased on services as part of Unlock 1.0 and 2.0 — as compared to the lockdown months of April and May in Prayagraj range. Prayagraj, Pratapgrah , Fatehpur and Kaushambi are the four districts which comprise Prayagraj range.



According to police data released on Tuesday, 1,322 road accidents were recorded in the four districts of the range between January and July, which claimed 715 lives and left 815 injured.

The highest number of accidents were recorded in Prayagraj district (624), followed by Fatehpur (287), Pratapgarh (212) and Kaushambhi (200).

The number of causalities and persons injured was also highest in Prayagraj at 276 and 414 respectively, followed by Fatehpur, Pratapgarh and Kaushambi.

The statistics showed that Prayagraj district witnessed 170 road accidents from June to July and 107 cases during the lockdown months of April and May.

In the road accidents which occurred in June and July, 82 persons died and 115 were injured. In April and May, 48 persons died and 68 were injured due to road accidents in Prayagraj district.

Statistics show that 624 road accidents were recorded since January 1 in the city this year — January (127) , February (116), March (104), April (26), May (81), June (96), and July (74).

These accidents claimed 276 lives in Prayagraj with the highest in January at 52, followed by February (47), March (47), June ( 45), May ( 41), July (37) and April (7).

The data showed that 414 people were injured during the seven-month period . While 85 were injured in road accidents in January, 82 sustained injuries in February, 64 in March, 21 in April, 47 in May, 65 in June and 50 in July.

In Kaushambi, 200 road accidents were recorded in between January 1 and July 31, which claimed 104 lives and left 124 injured. The highest number of accidents were recorded in January (34), followed by February (39), March (22), April (7), May (24), June (44) and July (30).

Pratapgarh recorded 212 road accidents till July — January ( 33), February (51), March ( 33), April ( 11), May ( 28), June ( 25) and July (31).

In Fatehpur district, 286 road accident cases were reported during the seven-month period — January (38), February (50), March (61), April ( 7), May ( 32), June ( 66) and July ( 32).

IG ( Prayagraj zone) KP Singh said, “Fewer cases of road accidents were reported during the lockdown months, the number increased in both fatal and non-fatal categories during the months when the restrictions were eased.”
