Rohit Suchanti: Good looks matter the most on TV

TV actor Rohit Suchanti who was last seen in Bigg Boss 12, is all set to make his fiction TV comeback as the lead in the upcoming show Dil Yeh Ziddi Hai that revolves around a visually-impaired girl. The 23-year-old actor, who debuted on small screen as a child actor in the TV show Saas Bina Sasural, went on to play an important role in the campus romance, Warrior High, followed by a turn in the saasbahu saga Saath Nibhaana Saathiya .

Rohit played his first lead role in the show Rishta Likhenge Hum Naya (opposite Tejasswi Prakash) which was shot extensively in Rajasthan, a state where he also spent his formative years. Rohit, who has done his schooling from Jaipur however hasn’t been able to visit the city in a long time. “My parents have shifted to Mumbai so, it’s been about 7-8 years since I’ve visited Jaipur. I would love to visit Jaipur someday,” he says wistfully.

Rohit confesses that even though he’s done saas-bahu soaps in the past, he doesn’t want to “return to saasbahu sagas” and picked his current show because of its “unique storyline and the fact that it’s a slice-oflife drama. "In real life, I am exactly like the character I play – focused, disciplined, ambitious and a great dancer. I could relate to the character instantly,” he says.

After Bigg Boss 12, Rohit traveled to and explored new places. He says, “I would like to associate myself with shows that have relatable character and realistic content rather than doing saas-bahu dramas that I’ve done in the past. This is also the reason why I didn’t do any other role post Bigg Boss 12.”

In an era where the viewership pattern is constantly evolving, Rohit feels Hindi TV shows need to create content that even millennials can connect with. He says, “I think it makes sense for makers to come up with new concepts considering that they are competing with web shows that have more realistic storylines. It’s a good thing that we are finally seeing some interesting stories in Hindi TV soaps too. The audience wants to see meaningful stories and I feel it is the need of the hour as far as TV goes.”

A contestant of Bigg Boss 12, Rohit says he continues to “follow the show” and finds the current season “more interesting than its previous season. "This time, the show is all about celebrities and they are doing great,” he says. The contestants were recently reprimanded for their violent and aggressive behaviour inside the house by Salman Khan, the host of the show. Reacting to it, Rohit says, “The house makes even a calm-headed person aggressive. When people constantly poke you and gossip about you, you tend to get irritated and I can understand why they are reacting in such a manner.” Ask Rohit who he is rooting for and he replies, “My heart wants Devoleena (Bhattacharjee, who played his mom in Saath Nibhaana Saathiya) to win the show, but my head says the winner will be Sidharth Shukla. I love his game, he is doing pretty well on the show and also happens to be a dear friend.”

Opening up on how life has changed after Bigg Boss, Rohit says, “More people know me after I did the show. It has given my career a boost. The show has also made me more disciplined.” Ask him if he would like to do any other reality show and Rohit is quick to answer, “Khatron Ke Khiladi. I’d really like to be a part of the high on adrenaline show.”

The actor, who was reportedly once replaced from a show even before he could begin shooting for it shares his point of view about why TV actors are being replaced overnight and how being a TV actor comes with its share of insecurities. “TV shows are all about TRPs and changes in storyline, screen space for actors are planned in a manner so that the show gets high TRPs. It’s sad, but we actors can’t do much about it,” he says.

Rohit also believes that in order to sustain oneself in TV, good looks are important. “Good looks matter the most on TV, more than one’s acting capabilities,” he says.
