RTC driver held for bid to sexually assault conductor

Hyderabad: A driver, who was temporarily hired in the wake of the ongoing RTC strike, of Mancherial bus depot was arrested when he tried to sexually assault a woman conductor inside a bus at an isolated place near Jaipur in Mancherial district on Thursday night.

The 21-year-old herself had joined as a temporary conductor recently. “All the passengers got down near Jaipur village and the bus was empty. The accused decided to take advantage of the situation and stopped the bus at an isolated forest area near Jaipur. When he attempted to sexually assault the conductor, she raised an alarm and escaped from there,” Ramagundam police commissioner V Satyanarayana said.

According to police, the woman pushed the driver away when he held her hand and tried to sexually assault her . “She let go of the cash and tickets in her possession. She got down from the bus and managed to get into an autorickshaw. She came to Srirampur police station and reported about the incident,” the commissioner said.

Srirampur police immediately alerted their counterparts at Jaipur police station. Cops launched a manhunt for the offender, intercepted the bus near Jaipur and took him to custody.

During the interrogation, the accused confessed to his actions. Based on his confession, a case under section 354 (assault or use of criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the IPC was registered against the accused, who was produced before the court on Friday. “The accused has been remanded in judicial custody,” a Jaipur police official said.

The bus was operated between Mancherial and Chennur.
