PATNA: Chief minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday launched the construction work of a medical college at Narghoghi village in Samastipur district . The project is estimated to cost Rs 591 crore.

Narghoghi village falls under Sarairanjan assembly constituency currently represented by Speaker Vijay Kumar Choudhary.

Spread in an area of 21 acres, the upcoming medical college will be a 500-bed hospital and there will be a 655-bed hostel for students. Altogether 197 quarters will be also constructed to provide accommodation to the doctors and employees on the campus

Addressing a function after launching the construction work, Nitish said the upcoming institution has been named as Sriram Janki Medical College and Hospital (SJMCH) as it is being built on a 21 acres of land provided by the Narghoghi-based Sriram Janki Trust. He said the trust provided this land free of cost to the state government. The CM thanked the trustees for providing the land.

He said, of the total cost, Rs 113 crore would be provided by the Centre, while the rest amount of Rs 478 crore will be given by the state government.

The construction of different structures of the SJMCH will be ready in the next three years and the medical college can admit 100 students per academic year. The hospital will have nine modular operation theatres, the CM added. A separate 100-bed ‘dharmashala’ is also coming up so that relatives accompanying the patients do not face any difficulty in accommodation near the hospital.

Once the hospital is ready, residents of Samastipur and neighbouring areas will not have to go to any other place for treatment. Accompanied by Speaker Vijay Kumar Choudhary, deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi , health minister Mangal Pandey and sugarcane development minister Ms Bima Bharti, the CM also viewed the master plan of the medical college and its hospital.
