School building collapses in Deoghar

DUMKA: A portion of a three-storey school building collapsed in Deoghar district’s Madhupur sub-divisional headquarters on Thursday morning. There was no casualty in the incident.

Sub-divisional officer Yogendra Prasad said, “The portion of the school building which collapsed used to house classrooms for students of classes IV, V, VIII and X.

There was neither any casualty nor anyone trapped in the debris.”

He added, “As of now, the school management was directed not to open the school till the remaining portion of the building is examined by government engineers.”

Eyewitnesses said a portion of the Carmel School, a Christian missionary institute, located on Lord Sinha Road, came down with loud sound in the morning. “As we rushed to the spot, we saw a part of the building has turned into rubble,” Pramod Vidyarthi, a local resident said, pointing out that classes in the school are suspended till March 14 because of the ongoing board examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Academic Council.

He added, “Had there been regular classes today, it would have had casualties. Luckily, there was no exam scheduled today, either.” Other local residents said the building is about five decades old and renovation work was taken up recently.
