SDRF rescues 125 in Majuli, flood situation now critical

JORHAT: With the flood situation in chief miniter Sarbananda Sonowal's constituency Majuli turning critical, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has been forced into action to help the affected people. According to a statement issued by the district administration, the SDRF team, on Sunday, rescued 112 people from Bhakat Chapori and 13 from Pagla Chapori who were subsequently shifted to a relief camp.

The number of affected in the area has also gone up to 78,547 as floodwaters has engulfed 90 villages.


Deputy Commissioner (Majuli), Debaprasad Misra, said, "Relief materials like rice, dal, salt and mustered oil has been distributed among the flood victims and adequate relief material have been stocked." The ferry service to and from Majuli also remained suspended for the fourth consecutive day. According to the central water commission, the Brahmaputra was still flowing above the danger mark at Neematighat on Sunday.

The story of Jorhat is also no different from that of the rest of the state. Two children - Saniya Tahu and Sen Das - were declared dead. SDRF personnel fished out their bodies which have been sent for autopsy. According to district administration official, the incident occured at Teok and Jorhat west revenue circle areas. In Jorhat, the number of affected has gone up twofold to 47,690 people. 77 villages of Jorhat west, Titabor , Teok and Jorhat east revenue circle remained under water on Sunday. On Saturday the number of affected was 24,896 in 61 villages.
