Security beefed up in the Nilgiris

Udhagamandalam: In wake of the high alert over the entry of terrorists in Coimbatore, Nilgiris police carried out vehicle checks at all the entry points to the district.

Police personnel have been deployed in all the tourist spots and other important places in the district, Nilgiris SP C Kalaiselvan said.

“Security has been beefed up in the Nilgiris district ahead of the high alert over the entry of terrorists in Coimbatore. A special battalion comprising 80 police personnel has been allotted to the Nilgiris, besides the local police,” he told TOI.

According to the SP, over 700 police personnel in various categories have been deployed at places such as the Defence Services Staff College and Madras Regimental Centre in Wellington. “All the 16 check posts in the district have been manned with armed police. All the vehicles passing through the check posts are duly checked,” he said.

Armed security personnel have been deployed in tourist spots such as the Government Botanical Garden, Ooty lake, Sim’s Park and Paykara lake. “The security measure will continue till we receive instruction from senior authorities,” the SP added. TNN
