Sikhs take out holy procession in Visakhapatnam

VISAKHAPATNAM: The city’s Sikh community took out a holy procession ( nagar kirtan ) ahead of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak , the founder of Sikhism, which falls on Tuesday.

After morning prayers, the nagar kirtan was flagged off by police chief RK Meena from Gurudwara Sadh Sangat at 2pm. Children and adults were involved in the processional singing of holy hymns (shabad kirtan ), sweeping and sprinkling of water throughout the procession, which passed through Seethammapeta, RTC complex, Jail Road, Jagadamba Junction, Ramnagar, Beach Road, Siripuram, Satyam Junction and MRO Junction before heading back to the gurudwara at 7pm.

Children treated the passers-by to ‘gatka’ feats, a popular martial art form, at various junctions. As many as 2,000 devotees participated in the procession, following which a langar was organised at the gurudwara. “This is the time when we all get together for a cause and pray for everyone’s well-being,” said DS Anand, president, Gurudwara Sadh Sangat.
