Siliguri mayor Ashok Bhattacharya undergoes angioplasty

KOLKATA: Siliguri mayor and Left Front leader Ashok Bhattacharya underwent angioplasty at Fortis Hospital Anandapur on Tuesday. The 69-year-old had come to the hospital with severe blockages in his two major arteries, requiring the doctors to put stents.

Bhattacharya had complained of heaviness and chest pain on August 24.

He was initially rushed to a private hospital in Siliguri where doctors found 85% blockage in one of the two arteries. He was referred to Fortis Hospital and was admitted here on August 27, said Dr Shuvanan Ray, director cardiology .

After a close examination of his angiography doctors successfully performed angioplasty to put the stents into the patient. An Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) performed later confirmed a successful stent placement.

“The patient is under constant observation and is responding well to the treatment,” said a statement from the hospital.
