Six of 7 speed guns defunct on Beed Bypass rd

Aurangabad: With six of the seven speed guns lying defunct , the Aurangabad city are heavily relying on the only functioning one to bring a check on the speeding heavy vehicles plying on the Beed Bypass Road, which is considered an accident-prone spot.

Traffic inspector Ashok Modiraj said, “We have deployed a dedicated team at the Beed Bypass for keeping a check on unruly as well as speeding vehicles.

They have been given the speed gun we have.”

The speed gun raises an alarm as soon as any vehicle passing by travels beyond the permissible limit, and it also records the speed at which the vehicle passed, following which the traffic police intercept the vehicle and fine the driver.

The speed gun was deployed on NH-52 on Friday when four heavy vehicles were slapped with a challan of Rs 1,000 each. The action continued the second day as well.

Perturbed by the frequently occurring fatal accidents along the Beed Bypass road, former commissioner of police Amitesh Kumar, in April 2017, issued directives banning entry of heavy vehicles on the 10-km stretch between 7am and10pm.

Considering subsequent pleas from transporters, the timings were relaxed and heavy vehicles were allowed to ply between 12pm-4pm as well.

After Yashasvi Yadav took charge of the city, he relaxed the this restriction and ordered speed guns and breathalysers to be deployed at the bypass. Soon after which they were withdrawn for reasons best known to the traffic department.
