Slain bandit Dadua's brother Bal Kumar Patel joins Congress

LUCKNOW: Former SP MP and dreaded bandit Dadua's brother Bal Kumar Patel joined Congress in the presence of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in Delhi on Friday. The party has decided to field him from Banda. Kumar, an OBC leader from Bundelkhand , wields clout in Kurmi community. The 55-year-old leader old TOI, "I left SP because it did not recognise my hard work of 14 years.

I had nurtured Banda seat for five years, but instead of rewarding me SP fielded a critic of the party."

"I had been raising my voice against BJP and BSP was out of question as it is same as SP. I even considered contesting elections as an independent but after the Congress formed the government in three states and announced farm loan waiver within 24 hours of swearing in, I approached them." After Dadua was killed in an encounter during Mayawati's regime, Kumar joined the SP. In 2009, he contested and won elections from Mirzapur.

In 2014, the SP fielded him from Banda but he lost. Sources said he was hopeful of SP ticket from Banda again but the party picked Shyama Charan Gupta, the sitting BJP MP from Allahabad.
