Speed cameras on NH 44 in Ambala

AMBALA: Haryana Police is installing speed cameras and automatic number-reading machines on National Highway (NH) 44 to keep a check on speeding.

The equipment has been installed at three points in Ambala district — near Devi Nagar toll plaza, near DRM office and Model Town (MT) crossing near Jaggi City Centre.

According to official data, Ambala district recorded 276 deaths in fatal crashes in 2018, 240 deaths in 2019, and 313 in 2016 and 236 in 2017.

Many of these crashes took place on NH 44, State Highway 1 (Raipur Rani to Markanda Bridge via Naraingarh), and NH 72 (Ambala-Haridwar), said police. Ambala traffic deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Munish Sehgal said, “On NH 44, from Sonipat to Shambhu border, 20 spots have been identified to reduce fatal crashes and check speeding. Three spots fall in Ambala district, Speeding vehicles will be issued challans.

The project is coordinated through IGP traffic of Karnal range. After we start issuing slips to residents, it will spread awareness and reduce fatal crashes.”

In the beginning of 2020, Haryana Police identified the stretch of NH 44 from Kundli in Sonipat to Shambhu border in Ambala district as the deadliest road in India.

Dr Rohit Baluja from Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE) had informed that 187km stretch of NH 44 recorded 743 deaths in 2018, which makes it the most accidentprone highway in India. On January 7, this year, a meeting between officials of state transport department and engineers of IRTE was held in Chandigarh.
