Speeding truck crushes elderly woman to death in Ludhiana

LUDHIANA: An elderly woman died, while another sustained minor injuries, when a speeding truck hit their scooter at Hambran road here on Saturday morning. The truck driver managed to escape while leaving the vehicle on spot.


The deceased woman has been identified as Gurmeet Kaur (65), of Pratap Singh Wala area and injured was her daughter Mandeep Kaur (30).

According to police, the accident occurred around 9am on Saturday when the mother-daughter duo was on the way to market on Hambran road.

While Mandeep Kaur was driving the scooter, Gurmeet Kaur was riding pillion.

SHO at police station PAU, inspector Bhagwant Bhullar said there are a number of potholes on Hambran road. When the duo reached near Radhan Soami Satsang Center, the woman slowed down the scooter to avoid potholes. Meanwhile, an overspeeding truck hit the two-wheeler from behind. Gurmeet Kaur fell on the road, getting crushed below the tyres of truck, while her daughter fell on the side, the inspector said.

Some onlookers raised alarm after which the truck driver stopped. However, he managed to flee leaving the vehicle on spot.

A case under sections 279 (reckless driving), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) and 304-A (causing death due to negligence) of IPC has been registered against unidentified driver of the truck.

Bhullar further said the police have managed to gain information that the truck driver belongs to village Mukeriya. A police team has been sent to arrest the accused.
