Speeding truck kills Kolar woman on way to office

BHOPAL: A speeding tanker truck driver hit a 32-year-old woman, who was on her way to office on her scooter, and dragged her more than 30 feet in an attempt to escape. The lower half of her body was crushed and she died in hospital two hours later.

The victim, 32-year-old Nidhi Mishra Chaturvedi , was an employee of the State Open School Board.

She lived in Kolar with her husband Darpan, a software engineer. They married just two years ago.

Nidhi usually drove to work on a scooter. Saturday was no different. But when she was near Bhopal Dental Hospital, a tanker truck hit her from behind. She was thrown against a divider, and got entangled with the truck. Instead of stopping the trucker sped on, dragging her for 30 feet along the road, said investigation officer ASI Jaswant Singh . Other commuters gave a chase, screaming for him to stop.

The driver braked, jumped out and ran away. Locals carried Nidhi to Hamidia Hospital , where doctors tried desperately to save her, but she died two hours later. Local residents protested on the road, saying reckless truck drivers are becoming a daily menace in the township.

Investigation officer ASI Jaswant Singh said that around 10.30am Nidhi had left home on her scooter to office. When she reached near Bhopal dental hospital on the main road a speeding water tanker hit her scooter from back. The collision was so intense that Nidhi fell on the divider and then on the road. The errant truck driver in a bid to run away sped the vehicle with Nidhi stuck under the rear wheels. She was dragged for around 30 feet and crushed under the wheels.

Nidhi’s father R S Mishra, a senior technician with Directorate of Public Instructions, fell ill on learning of her death and has been hospitalized. The truck driver is yet to be arrested.
