Spraying water in air, on trees improves Yamunanagar's AQI

YAMUNANAGAR: The district administration is using fire tenders to spray water in the air and on trees in the areas under the Yamunanagar-Jagadhri municipal corporation to improve air quality, and the step is already showing positive result.

In the last few days, the air quality index (AQI) of Yamunanagar has improved.

On Tuesday, it was recorded at 228, in a marked improvement from Monday’s 337.

In Yamunanagar, fire tenders are being used to spray water on trees and in the air so that a balance between pollution and air quality is maintained and residents are able to breathe with some ease under such severe conditions.

The district has a large number of factories and jaggery units in Bilaspur, which are violating pollution norms.

Yamunanagar deputy commissioner Mukul Kumar said, “There has been an improvement in AQI due to spraying of water. On Tuesday, all the concerned teams were in the field to spread awareness about paddy stubble burning and other pollution-related issues. I am monitoring the situation closely and every hour the report is obtained from the concerned officials. The spraying of water reduces the pollution level in the air.”

“The government and administration are concerned about the air quality. Special efforts are being made to spread awareness. On Tuesday, our teams conducted gram sabhas and made people take vows against stubble burning. In the past few days, we have seen AQI improve from severe to poor category. Efforts will continue in the coming time. Jaggery units in Bilaspur area will also be checked for norm violations,” he said.

Till Tuesday, the district saw 189 stubble fire incidents, five FIRs against the erring farmers and penalties worth Rs 70,000 from 28 farmers, stated a report from the agriculture department.
