Storm cripples life, kills hope in Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur districts

KENDRAPADA: Life was completely paralysed in Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur districts on Saturday, a day after cyclonic storm Fani hit coastal Odisha. Uprooted trees damaged several vehicles and houses, which in turn brought traffic to a crawl in many parts of both the districts.

It was the most powerful storm on record to hit Odisha coast after the 1999 Super Cyclone.

Fani battered seaside villages and towns , destroying houses, ripping up trees and knocking out power supply.

Now most of the cyclone -affected villagers feel trapped and overpowered by nature's fury. "We have lost everything. I do not think we can stand up again. My six-room house was completely damaged in the storm," said Ramani Ranjan Das of the seaside Kansarbadasandua village in Kendrapada district.

Saroj Mandal, 56, of Batighar village had constructed four roomed asbestos house three years ago. His house was completely damaged. Raghunath Paramanika of Sujanapur village in Jajpur district tries to fight back his tears as he talks of his 14- year-old son, Kalpataru, who died in the cyclone.
