Sumalatha Ambareesh wins Mandya

It was a close race for Sandalwood actors Sumalatha Ambareesh and Nikhil Kumaraswamy as they were pitted against each other for the
2019 Lok Sabha elections. Nikhil and Sumalatha have carved their niche in Sandalwood but are both debutantes in the field of politics. While Nikhil put up a close fight, in the end, Sumalatha held her ground and won the seat at Mandya .

The seat had been a strong hold of the late actor and three-time MP Ambareesh for a long time. Nikhil seemed to be leading the race for a short while in this term of the elections, but eventually, Sumalatha emerged victor and reclaimed the post held by her late husband, by a fairly large vote margin. Along with her son, upcoming actor Abishek Ambareesh, she was backed by actors Yash and Darshan all through her campaign.
