Tadoba-Karhandla tiger corridor to be cut in road widening

Nagpur: Even as NHAI has geared up to widen Nagpur‐Umred‐Naghbid‐Brahmapuri‐Armori section of NH‐353D and Gondkhairi to Saoner road through Kalmeshwar and Dhapewada from existing two to four-lane with paved shoulders, the former will cut through tiger corridor between Tadoba and Umred-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary (UKWS).

The section of the road between Umred and Bhiwapur falls in the eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) of the sanctuary and any upgradation will need permission of state wildlife board.

Though most of the land involved in road widening between Kalmeshwar and Saoner is agricultural, wild animal deaths have been regularly reported between Umred and Bhiwapur. Anticipating that getting wildlife permission will not be easy, the PWD too had left the road untouched and worked on an alternative road.

“As the road is passing through the middle of the forest area, bypassing the forest and the proposed ESZ is not possible. We plan to leave the road near the sanctuary untouched and if not possible, we will implement the project with mitigation measures,” NHAI sources said.
