Tamil Nadu: Bengaluru-Karaikal train derails near Krishnagiri

The engine of No 56514 Bengaluru-Karaikal passenger train derailed near Kadusettipatty in Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu on Sunday morning.


South Western Railway (SWR) officials said the derailment had happened between Rayakottai and Marandahalli on the Byyapanahalli-Salem section of the Bengaluru railway division.



The train left Rayakottai station at 9.30am. At 9.40am, loco pilot S P Singh and guard Ramesh Kumar, both from Bengaluru division, noticed that the front wheel of the loco had derailed.

"There were no injuries and casualties to any passenger/staff and no derailment of coaches," Bengaluru divisional railway manager Ashok Kumar Verma told TOI. "Only the front wheel of the engine got derailed," he said.

Verma and other senior railway officials reached the spot at 11.23am in an accident relief train.

Rail traffic between Bengaluru and Salem was affected due to the incident. Verma said buses were arranged at Hosur for Salem-bound passengers.

Railway officials provided snacks for the stranded passengers at Rayakottai."The loco was re-railed at 12.53pm, and the train resumed its journey at 2.34pm", the official said.

Train No 11014 Lokmanyatilak Express (Coimbatore Junction to Lokmanyatilak Terminus in Mumbai) was diverted via Salem, Tirupattur, Bangarapet and KSR Bengaluru City due to the incident.

Another railway official said they were investigating the reason for the derailment. Karaikal passenger is one of the popular trains and many Hosur-bound office-goers from Bengaluru travel in it. It is also used by those working in the Outer Ring Road in Bengaluru. The train leaves KSR Bengaluru City Railway Station at 7.17am and reaches Karaikal in the Union territory of Puducherry at 10.40pm.
