Tamil Nadu: Bricks production starts again in Erode

ERODE: Brick kilns in the district have started manufacturing bricks again after their production was halted a month ago following continuous rain.

“We dry the bricks keeping them in the kiln. But all the work was halted due to continuous rain,” T Muniappan, a brick chamber owner, said. The chamber owners faced a huge loss during this period, he added.

The production halt created a shortage of bricks in the market. “However, we have managed to continue construction work with hollow blocks and have decided not to increase the price of the bricks due to shortage,” Muniappan said. At present, a single brick costs about Rs 6 excluding truck fare and loading and unloading charges.

The Erode district has a total of 60 brick chambers and 28 of them are situated within the city limit. Most of them are situated along the roads leading to Karur, Bhavani, Ammapet, Andhiyur and Sathyamangalam.

According to brick chamber owners, it would take at least 16 days to produce a single brick. First seven days are used to make the brick wet using clay while the rest are taken to dry the wet brick.

They said the best time to produce bricks is summer. “But bricks will be needed throughout the year and we have to meet the demand at any time,” said S Kandavel, one of the chamber owners.
