Tamil Nadu Government appoints commissioner for school education

Chennai: In a significant development, the state government on Thursday appointed an IAS officer, Sigy Thomas Vaidhyan, as commissioner of school education . The 2002-batch officer will be stationed in the DPI campus and look after directorates of school, elementary education and matriculation schools.

The directorates are hitherto headed by officials promoted from the school education department. “With number of reforms being introduced including a new syllabus, the government felt the need to appoint a cadre officer to coordinate the three directorates for better monitoring and improve the quality of education. The directors will report to the commissioner,” said a senior official. The neighbouring states appoint commissioners in the rank of IAS to handle the regulatory framework and quality management. Successive governments in the past ‘hardly had any zeal’ and appointed only the promotees of the education department at the helm of affairs. Interestingly, commissioner for school education is a cadre post.

In a minor reshuffle, the state government on Thursday transferred collectors of Villupuram, Thanjavur and Virudhunagar districts. Thanjavur collector A Annadurai has been transferred and posted as Villupuram collector. L Subramanian, who was holding that post, has been posted as secretary of state election commission. Subramanian replaced S Palanisamy, who has been appointed as director of town panchayats. Govinda Rao is now the new collector for Thanjavur district.

Civil supplies and consumer protection commissioner R Kannan has been posted as collector of Virudhunagar district, replacing A Sivagnanam, who has been appointed as joint secretary of health and family welfare department.
