Tamil Nadu government keen on banning TikTok

CHENNAI: Minister for Information and Technology M Manikandan on Thursday said that the State government is keen on banning social media video app, TikTok .

Replying to Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi MLA Thamimun Ansari, who urged the government to ban the application that resulted in unwanted incidents, the minister said that the government wrote two letters in the month of February this year to the Centre to prohibit the social media application.

The issue has also been taken to the notice of Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) of the union minister of information and technology. CERT has also deployed a nodal officer in the state.

In the meantime, a case was filed before the Madurai high court to ban the application. However, the Chinese firm, which developed the app, had approached the higher court and assured that it has a mechanism to regulate the content. It also pleaded the HC to vacate the ban on downloading the app.

However, the app was misused and this resulted in unwanted incidents, he said. “We are keen to ban the app and we will send a reminder to Centre to ban the app for sure," he said.
