Tamil Nadu: Krishnagiri sees first positive case, but stays green

Krishnagiri district, the lone green zone in Tamil Nadu , reported its first Covid-19 positive case on Saturday, a 67-year-old man. The district, however, continues to be classified as green as the case has been categorised as ‘ imported’ and is being in Salem.

The sexagenarian from Nallur village in Krishnagiri had recently visited Puttaparthi in Andhra Pradesh, collector S Prabhakar said.

The man and his family had gone to Puttaparthi in March and returned last week.

As soon as they returned, the district health authorities took them to a temporary quarantine centre. Since, the man developed symptoms of Covid-19, samples were collected from him and sent for lab test. Test results indicated that he was Covid-19 positive, and subsequently he was shifted to Salem Government Mohankumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital. Swab samples have been collected from eight others..

The entire Nallur village has been declared as a containment area and sealed. Disinfectants were sprayed all across the village. Senior officials, including the collector, visited Nallur village to monitor the containment work. Officials said all residents of the village would be tested for Covid-19.

Meanwhile, Coimbatore recorded a Covid-19 positive case on Saturday, after a span of eight days. The patient, a 44-year-old man suffering from acute myeloid leukemia, had gone to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai, for cancer treatment on Thursday. When the hospital took a PCR-antigen test before starting his treatment, they found him positive for Covid-19. Since authorities deduced that he must have been infected in Coimbatore, the case has been added to the district’s list and not Chennai’s. Authorities here have identified 54 contacts of the patient within CMCH. They have tested 10 of them so far and all of them have tested negative. Some 44 people will be tested on Sunday, other than his family members and neighbours in Kavundampalayam.
