Tamil Nadu: Man tries to hide wife's murder, detained

Chennai: A 40-year-old man who tried to conceal the suspicious death of his wife has been detained by the Tiruvottiyur police. The accused, Ezhumalai, a lorry owner, married Vanitha, 32, about 15 years ago, and they have two children.

Ezhumalai often quarrelled with Vanitha as he suspected her fidelity and beat her brutally.

On October 15, he allegedly beat Vanitha with a rolling pin . Vanitha, who sustained injuries in the attack, went to a government hospital where she got herself admitted for two days. She was recently discharged.

However, Vanitha kept complaining of headache, though Ezhumalai turned a deaf ear to it. She said Ezhumalai’s attack had caused her injury. On Monday, she suddenly collapsed and died at the house. Panicking over her sudden death, Ezhumalai decided to conceal it from police and took the body to his hometown in Tiruvannamalai district in a private ambulance for cremation. He told neighbours that she suffered a cardiac arrest.

When he reached Tiruvannamalai, Vanitha’s father Kuppusamy lodged a complaint with police there, raising suspicion over his daughter’s death as she had complained to him about the attack two weeks ago.

The Tiruvottiyur police was alerted regarding the incident and Vanitha’s body was sent back to Tiruvottiyur on request and from there to the Government Stanley Medical Hospital for autopsy. The Tiruvottiyur police registered a case and detained Ezhumalai for investigation. Police await the autopsy report.
