Telangana: Heavy Rain Alert For Next 2 Days

The lingering cyclonic circulation over Andhra Pradesh and neighbourhood continues to bring wet weather across the region. After authorities issued an alert for heavy rainfall in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on Monday and Tuesday, now parts of Telangana will be on alert on Wednesday and Thursday.

The national Met agency, the IMD, had earlier warned that heavy rains (which it defines as recorded rainfall of up to 115 mm in a span of 24 hours) were likely on Tuesday in coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh like Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari and West Godavari.

For Telangana, the last two weeks have been marked by strong rainfall, thanks to the active monsoon conditions prevalent in the region. While the state has received 10% excess rainfall from October 1 to 14, the rains have been even more bountiful for the capital Hyderabad, which, at nearly 100 mm, has received 87% surplus rain in the last two weeks.

However, the excess rain has also brought woes to the capital city, with multiple flooding episodes being reported. On Friday, a local lake in Alwal overflowed due to heavy rains, flooding many localities and causing traffic jams. More rains on Saturday only compounded the city's problems. The IMD has said that evening or night rains and thundershowers are likely in Hyderabad from October 15 to 18.

Over in Andhra Pradesh, the rains have been higher in Rayalseema region which got 27% excess rainfall from October 1-14 this year, while Coastal AP and Yanam got 29% below-normal rainfall over the same period.

On Tuesday morning, Tirupathi in Andhra Pradesh recorded 18 mm rain while Machilapatnam got 10.5 mm over the past 24 hours. No rain was recorded in Telangana (including in Hyderabad) on Monday, but with the warning in place, wet weather is likely to return across the state this week.
