Thieves take away ATM with Rs 40 lakh cash at Fatehgarh Sahib

PATIALA: ATM thieves struck at Rurki village in Fatehgarh Sahib early on Wednesday and decamped with a teller machine containing Rs 40 lakh cash from an SBI kiosk.

The criminals entered the ATM kiosk with their faces covered and uprooted the machine, police said.

SisProsegur Private Limited, assigned for the job, had recently deposited Rs 40 lakh cash in the ATM.

Lakhwinder Singh, cash officer of SisProsegur, said it was the second attempt in a month to steal cash from the ATM.

“Last month, some unidentified persons had attempted to uproot the machine, but they failed. The machine was repaired at a cost Rs 70,000. The SBI authorities should have deployed a security guard following the incident,” Lakhwinder added.

“On Wednesday, the thieves struck again. The incident happened despite police patrolling on the route,” he said.

Sirhind SHO Manpreet Singh said, “We have collected the CCTV footage from the bank and have initiated the probe into the matter. We are collecting details about the previous incident. Sketches of the accused are being made with the help of CCTV footage. They will be nabbed soon.”
