Thousands bid farewell to Maate Mahadevi

BAGALKOT: The final rites of Maate Mahadevi , the head of Basava Dharma Peetha, were performed as per the Lingayat tradition at Kudal Sangam on Saturday.


Over 10,000 people paid their final respects to Maate Mahadevi. The Shatasthal flag was hoisted at the cremation spot. The Samadhi Sthal was constructed 24 years ago as per the suggestion of Maate.



A huge screen was placed to enable devotees to witness the final rites from a distance. Devotees were served meals from Friday night at 22 counters. Seers and prominent personalities remembered the services of Maate Mahadevi at a condolence meeting which started at 11am. Home minister MB Patil, IGP Raghavendra Suhas, superintendent of police CB Rishyant, deputy commissioner R Ramchandran and ZP CEO Gangubai Manakar paid floral tributes to Maate Mahadevi.

The final rites were performed with full state honours. The mortal remains reached Kudal Sangam on Friday night. She passed away in Bengaluru on Thursday.
