Three children drown in quarry pond

KRISHNAGIRI: Three children drowned in a stone quarry pond near Mathigiri here on Saturday while fishing. All the three were children of migrant labourers from Assam and they were staying at Anchettipalli near Mathigiri, said a police officer attached to Mathigiri police station.

The deceased were identified as M Babu, 12, R Ajay, 13 and R Lakshmi, 7.

According to police, their parents were working as daily wage labourers with some private companies in Hosur .

The incident took place when Mona, 32, went to the stone quarry pond for fishing along with her son Babu and neighbour’s children Ajay and Lakshmi.

“When Mona went to attend nature’s call, the children entered the pond and drowned as they didn’t know swimming,” the officer said.

When Mona returned, she found the children battling for life and cried for help. Soon, other villagers rushed to the pond, but the children had drowned by then, the officer said.

When alerted, the Mathigiri police retrieved the bodies and sent them to the government hospital in Hosur for postmortem. They have registered a case and further inquiry is on.
