Three men kidnap, rob Chennai-born US man; one held, two on run

CHENNAI: Three men kidnapped and robbed a 52-year-old Chennaiite, settled in the US, before dumping him on a road. Police on friday arrested one person and launched a hunt for two other accomplices.

Krishna, a resident of T Nagar, had come to Chennai to look after his ailing father. After visiting a Tasmac bar on North Boag Road in T Nagar on Friday, he was walking unsteadily.

Noticing him, the three men in a taxi stopped near him. Two of them got off and started a conversation pretending to ask for an address. They requested him to get into the car, so that they could drop him at his house before going to their location.

Krishna agreed and they proceeded towards Chengalpet instead of dropping him at T Nagar as promised. As the man was drunk, they snatched his wallet and took all his credit and debit cards.

They stopped near an ATM kiosk in Guduvancherry and tried to withdraw cash, but Krishna gave them the wrong PIN.

They also tried to withdraw cash using his green card, a unique identity card for every US citizen but which is not a debit or credit card. Later, they dumped him on the roadside after snatching ?1,000 from his wallet and his expensive mobiles.

Based on his complaint, police traced the suspects with the help of CCTV camera footage recorded at the ATM in Guduvancherry. Police arrested the taxi driver Nagarajan.
