Tiger presence confirmed in Mihan, 15 kms from city

Nagpur: The confusion over the carnivore sighted in Multimodal International Cargo Hub & Airport at Nagpur (MIHAN) has been cleared with a tiger being photographed in one of the camera traps installed by the forest department. The spot is about 15 kms from the city.

Assistant conservator of forests Surendra Kale confirmed that the image of a tiger has been captured at 10.18pm on Sunday in one of the camera traps installed near the Dahegaon canal.

“We are monitoring the area round-the-clock,” he said. “Now that the tiger presence has been confirmed, we will find out from where it came.”

According to one of the volunteers, Pravin Katre, who has been keeping watch and helping the MIHAN security personnel to maintain restraint, the carcass of a calf was found near Dahegaon village.

“The calf was tied to a wooden pole but the carnivore seems to have killed and consumed most of it at the same spot without dragging the animal. The incident may have occurred on Sunday night,” said security officials.

Kale said, “We learnt about the killing of a calf on Monday evening. A panchnama will be done on Tuesday. On Monday banners have been displayed in MIHAN and awareness is being created among four villages in its vicinity.”

On Sunday, TOI was first to report about presence of a tiger in MIHAN based on eyewitness accounts. The big cat was sighted on Sunday too by the security personnel and some volunteers. One of the farm labourers also claimed he heard roar of a tiger on Monday night.
