Tirupur invites NGOs to take up desilting of irrigation tanks

Tirupur: The district administration has invited non-governmental organizations (NGOz) to take up more desilting and cleaning works of irrigation tanks in the district.

While the state government had issued orders to carry out 134 kudimaramathu works in the tanks owned by the Public Works Department (PWD), the district rural development agency (DRDA) was directed to desilt 824 ponds under the Jal Shakthi Abhiyan scheme.

The remaining 701 tanks in the district would be cleaned in the next phase.

Some non-governmental organizations (NGOs) had earlier come forward to desilt the tanks in a few villages. Now, the district administration has decided to private companies as well as more NGOs to spend for the cause.

“The administration has joined hands with the NGOs to desilt and clean the tanks at Vengamedu on Angeripalayam road, Vanjipalayam, Kavilipalayam and Karaipudur. They are contributing 100% for the works,” said a senior revenue official.

He said they would invite more NGOs to take up the work. “People could approach us and submit application to desilt the tanks of their choice. We would quickly provide them permission. The tanks could be either owned by PWD or the local panchayats.”

A DRDA official said the district administration had appointed a special team of revenue officials led by DRDA assistant project director for providing permissions for the works. “In the case of desilting, the soil would not be permitted to be taken out of the tanks. The soil should be utilized only for strengthening the bunds.”
