TMC begins to rope in apolitical faces

Kolkata: As part of Trinamool Congress ’ efforts to bring apolitical influencers into the partyfold, Chandrasekhar Kundu , the computer science teacher who led the “save food” movement from Asansol, joined the party on Friday.

Kundu, known as a nutrition warrior who had been feeding street children for nearly half a decade, had so far been out of political ambit.

“Simple changes during policymaking can have a large impact on society. My aim is to do just that. It is time to stop sitting on the fence and criticising the government. We should better be part of policymaking process,” said Kundu, teacher at Asansol Engineering College.

“His contribution to society cannot be denied. Social workers are getting influenced by government’s pro-people policies,” said Trinamool secretary general Partha Chatterjee.

Party spokesperson Dinesh Trivedi, who joined politics after pursuing consumer rights movement in Bengal, felt politics was an equally powerful tool for social work.

In August, party insiders said, some more new non-political faces will join Trinamool, giving it an image makeover.
