To improve property tax collection, Dehradun civic body to set up camps in slums

DEHRADUN: In a bid to increase the property tax collection, Dehradun Municipal Corporation has decided to set up camps in 129 slums of the city to cover more than 30,000 homes. The camps will be set up in wards where slum population is high and collection will begin from the first week of June.

In a meeting of the tax officials held on Saturday, city mayor Sunil Uniyal Gama said that the DMC will come up with the schedule of the camps and the residents of the area will be informed before the camps are set up so that they can turn up in large numbers.

The DMC has also ordered its tax officials to make sure that all the commercial establishments are brought under the tax ambit. “The tax collection works on self-declaration model where residents and commercial establishments declare the area occupied by them and pay taxes. However, we find a lot of discrepancies in the details provided by them, hence, we have decided that the tax officials will do a field survey of each commercial establishment in their designated zones and present a report within 30 days. Meanwhile, the weekly progress of the survey will also be monitored by the DMC,” Gama said.

Gama further said that action will be taken against officials if it is found that owners of commercial establishments in their zones are not paying taxes.

“We have also ordered officials to formulate the details of properties in the newly included 40 wards under the DMC. All the details will be compiled within two months and tax will be collected from the residents of these wards as well,” Gama said.
