Trafficking of newborns: 3 more held in Namakkal

NAMAKKAL: Three more people were arrested in connection with the Namakkal baby trafficking case on Saturday even as police said the main accused, retired nursing assistant R Amuthavalli, had sold 11 newborns in the last three years to childless couples across Tamil Nadu.

Namakkal district superintendent of police R Arularasu told TOI that all the 11 babies were girls and were sold for up to ?3 lakh though none of the biological parents got even ?1 lakh.

Six of the babies were taken from poor tribals in the Kolli hills for a few thousand rupees.

With Saturday’s arrests, six people have so far been taken into custody and police said more arrests were likely as they traced the network across the state. The racket was busted after an audio clip of Amuthavalli speaking to a prospective customer went viral on social media on Wednesday. The next day police arrested her and her husband, Ravichandran, and an ambulance driver.

Three worked as brokers

On Saturday, police arrested two women and a man who were working at infertility treatment centres in Erode, Coimbatore and Vellore. They were N Parveen, 37, of Amaravathi Nagar, T Hasina alias Nisha, 26, of Mamarathupalayam, and M Arulsamy, 48, of Surampatty. The three worked as brokers who put childless couples in touch with Amuthavalli.
