Train movement restored on Darbhanga-Sitamarhi route

PATNA: The East Central Railway (ECR) has restored the movement of trains on Darbhanga-Sitamarhi section late on Tuesday.

“Floodwaters passing underneath bridge number 18 between Kamtaul and Jogiyara on the Darbhanga-Sitamarhi route had crossed the danger mark. Thus, railways had temporarily suspended traffic movement on this section,” ECR’s chief public relations officer (CPRO) Rajesh Kumar said.

He said rail traffic was also restored on Bairgania-Kundwa Chainpur section under Samastipur division. The train services were suspended after floodwaters had overtopped railway tracks on July 13. “The damaged tracks were repaired,” he said.

The CPRO said all the 14 rail bridges on Kamala Balan river in Samastipur division have been affected by the floods. “Railways has installed ‘automatic water level gazing devices’ at each rail bridge to keep a close watch on the floodwaters. The system is foolproof and the device immediately alerts railway control room and track patrolling staff on duty,” he said.

A senior official in the Samastipur division said the situation was still grim at several places in the division. “We are constantly watching the situation. Safety officials are already camping at vulnerable places. Railways has placed sufficient stock of boulders, sand bags and saw dust and other required materials at the most sensitive locations in the division to save tracks from being submerged under floodwaters,” he said, adding an emergency control room has started functioning at the ECR headquarters in Hajipur and railway control room of the division at Samastipur.
