Transporters in Beed seek RTO chief's appointment

Aurangabad: The transporters from across Beed have threatened to take to the streets if the district is not allotted a full-time regional transport officer, apart from filling the posting the officers at the posts lying vacant for years.

The transporters have threatened to launch an agitation against the RTO authorities at Aurangabad and Mumbai offices if the pendency at the Beed office is not cleared on priority.

Of the 16 sanctioned posts at the Beed RTO office, only four have been filled. The huge difference in the number of vanancies and the posts filled is hampering the normal functioning of the office. Moreover, a deputy RTO from Aurangabad has been given an additional charge of the Beed office; however, he too, rarely turns up to the Beed office.

Due to the unavailability of full-time officer, several vehicles are failing to get the timely passing and other important processes done. Motor transport inspector Pradeep Kunkikar said that due to the lack of the required number of staffers, most tasks are getting delayed; however, we are taking a lot of efforts to get the work done on time.

Sources said that none of the officers are ready to take charge of the Beed RTO office due to some suspected scam committed at the RTO office. They also said that the Beed RTO office was pulled up by the police department in the past.

The locals have expressed their displeasure stating that their documents are pending with the RTO office for over 40 days now.

Musa Patel, a local, said that they are being forced to pay additional money to the agents for taking the documents all the way to Aurangabad and getting the signatures of the assigned officer as he fails to visit the Beed office.

“Those who cannot afford shelling extra money are being left-out and unable to get their works done,” said Kiran Patil, a local transporter.
