Trichy hosts plastic-free Tamil Nadu conference

TRICHY: A state-level conference to discuss the ill-effects of plastics on environment was held on the National College campus here on Sunday.

The daylong conference was organised by Trichy , Perambalur and Tirunelveli-based non-government organisations ( NGOs ) working on environmentalism.

The focus of the conference was success stories of various organisations in fanning behavioural change among people on environmentalism.

The ban on single-use plastic products came into effect in Tamil Nadu on January 1, 2019. However, banned plastic products are still in circulation. Government officials who participated in the meeting appealed to people to give up plastic carry bags.

An action plan to work against plastic pollution would be prepared at the end of the meeting.

A photo exhibition on the intensity of plastic pollution on water bodies and wildlife was held as part of the conference. There were stalls promoting eco-friendly products.

“Apart from plastics, we also discussed the need to promote rainwater harvesting in all government, private and residential buildings,” an organiser said.
