Trio promising to double money nabbed in Mahuva

RAJKOT: Three fraudsters, who employed an unusual method of duping people with the promise of doubling their money with the help of a bucket and coloured water, were arrested from the circuit house in Mahuva of Bhavnagar district on Sunday.

Police said the accused, identified as Imran Bhurani (35), Abdul Latif Qazi (47) and Akshay Munjpara (25), would approach victims with a bucket full of water in which they would pour black colour, after which they would put blank papers of the shape and size of currency notes.

Then, they would pull out actual currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 denominations.

“The bucket had a secret chamber at its bottom, and when nothing was visible inside the black water, the accused would pick out the actual currency notes from it. The accused would lure the victims with the promise of doubling their money. After taking money from the victims, they would tell them that it was a long procedure and they would call them, once their money had doubled, and then they would do the disappearing act,” said Nitin Khatana, head constable with Bhavnagar special operation group.

The accused were arrested following a tip-off about them in search of victims in Mahuva. “We sent a cop decoyed as a customer to the accused, and while they were giving him demonstration with a bucket and water, the cop exposed them by emptying the bucket and finding the secret chamber. Before they could flee, we arrested them,” said Khatana.

Police recovered 40 bundles of blank notes, a barrel full of black colour and Yugoslav dinars totalling Rs 21,000 from the accused.

During interrogation, the accused said they had duped a person in Vadodara of Rs 6.5 lakh by employing similar modus operandi. “We have alerted our counterparts in Vadodara and told them to secure the custody of the accused wanted in the case reported in their city,” added Khatana.
