TV anchor's death: Alappuzha police re-investigate the case

ALAPPUZHA: District police chief K M Tomy has started an investigation following parents of a television anchor alleged mystery behind the death of their daughter.

"We have collected the statements of the parents of the deceased Merin Babu, who was found dead in her flat within Alappuzha south police station limits in November 2018.

We have checked the autopsy report confirming her death as suicide. However, now we are investigating why did she take the extreme step and if somebody was responsible for it. We have just started the investigation and we are now checking the case file and its details," said the police chief.

A police officer said that Merin Babu's body was found hanging in November last year and at that time nobody alleged any mystery behind her death and they did not receive any complaints at that time.’’ As per the autopsy report, it was a suicide. So we have ended the investigation. However, in the wake of new complaint by her parents, we are resuming the investigation,’’ the officer said.

The Alappuzha police have re-started the investigation after the parents of Merin approached Kerala chief minister and Kochi city police saying that their daughter’s death was a murder.

It was in 2014 that Merin, hailing from Varapuzha, Ernakulam got married to Abhilash, an officer with a public -sector bank. He was a native of Tirur and was working in Alappuzha branch at the time of the incident. Merin was working in a car show room as a quality manager here and she also did anchoring in television channels. Merin and her husband were living in the flat near Pazhaveedu temple here.

According to her friend here, she was present in the office on November 9 (Friday), 2018 and she told them that she will be taking a leave on Monday. However, she did not come to the office on Saturday. Her husband called the office saying that she was not picking up his calls. "We learned that after he called the office, he called neighbours of their flat and asked them to check upon his wife. When the neighbours entered the flat, which was not locked, they found her hanging from the ceiling. She was very happy in the office on Friday and we did not see any worry or unhappiness in her face and talk. However, we don’t know the exact cause for her death,’’ the friend said.
