Two arrested for smuggling 15 tonne of PDS rice in TN

SALEM: Nearly 15 tonne of PDS rice was seized by the civil supplies crime investigation department (CSCID) officials in Salem city on Tuesday. Two men were arrested and a truck was seized.

CSCID officials identified the arrested men as K Karthik, 35, and cleaner N Raguraman,34.

The officials got a tip-off about the smuggling on Tuesday morning.

They were informed that the rice was being shifted from Villupuram to Karnataka via Salem district.


A police official said, “We were on a vehicle check at Seelanaickenpatti.”

The officials intercepted a truck that was arriving from Tirukoilur in Villupuram district. Truck driver Karthik told the officials he was heading to Bengaluru with rice bags.

“On checking the vehicle, we found PDS rice in 300 bags, each bag weighing 50 kg,” an official said.

Police seized all the bags of rice and truck worth Rs 10 lakh.

CSCID officials got to know that they were smuggling the rice to Bengaluru.

The arrested men were produced before judicial magistrate of Salem district combined court. They were lodged in Salem Central Prison on Tuesday.
