Two held in Katihar gang-rape case, one still on the run

PATNA: The Katihar police on Sunday arrested two people for their alleged involvement in the gang rape and subsequent murder of two minor girls, whose half-naked bodies were found from Gadai diara on August 8.

Katihar SP Vikas Kumar said the two — Goli Choudhary and Arjun Choudhary — were arrested from their hideout when they were about to escape.

The third accused, Ajay Choudhary, is still on the run.

During interrogation, Goli told police that Ajay had earlier proposed one of the two girls for marriage but she declined. Infuriated over her denial, Ajay decided to teach her a lesson and chalked out a strategy on Tuesday, a day before the incident.

When the victim went to her agricultural field to pluck pointed gourd along with her cousin the next day, Ajay and Goli held them captive. The girls’ throats were slit with a sharp-edged weapon when they resisted rape bid. Goli admitted that the girls’ private parts were chopped off and bodies thrown into a bush. The victims’ eyes were also gouged out by the main accused, Ajay, an investigating officer quoted Goli as saying.

The SP said the two were produced before the local court, which remanded them in judicial custody for 14 days. “Raids are on to nab other accused in the case. The police will obtain property attachment order from the court if Ajay didn’t surrender in a day or two,” he added.

The deceased’s family members said Ajay used to sexually harass the girls on their way to school. They had stopped going school due to fear,” said a close relative of one of the victims.

The victims, who happened to be classmates, were studying in Class VII in the local government school. The SP said the post mortem report would throw more light on the incident. “The autopsy report is still awaited,” he told this newspaper over the phone from Katihar.
