Two ITI students from Mumbai on picnic feared drowned in Khadavli river

KALYAN: Two Industrial Training Institute (ITI) students from Mumbai were feared drowned in Khadavli river, near Titwala, during a picnic on Thursday afternoon.

Police have decided to appeal to picnickers not to venture deep into the river, where many people have drowned before.

Akshay Barme (21), a resident of Wadala, and Krishna Share (19), from Jogeshwari, are students of ITI in Agripada.

Police said they and their nine friends had three days back planned the picnic at Khadavli. They met at Dadar railway station at 11.30am, from where they took a train to Khadavli railway station. An official said that on reaching at 12.45pm, they started swimming. Share went deep into the water as the level rose, and was drowning, when Barme went to rescue him.

Their friends informed the Titwala police, who called the fire brigade, Thane disaster management team and swimmers from Shahapur.

Sub-inspector Kamlakar Munde said, “A primary probe has revealed that the two did not know swimming. Teams are searching for them.”

The gram panchayat has put up posters warning picnickers but many ignore them. Senior inspector Balaji Pandhare said they too would put up a board appealing to people to be careful.
