Two killed in house collapse in Jamnagar

Rajkot: Two persons were killed when a 50-year-old three-storeyed building collapsed near Devubha Chowk in the old city area of Jamnagar on Friday morning. The deceased included the house owner Anwar Gandhara (45) and a mason Ashok Rahtod, whom Gandhara had hired for renovation work on the ground floor of the building.

Fire officials of the Jamnagar Municipal Corporation (JMC) said that one person was still buried under the debris and efforts were on to rescue him. The house owner Gandhara is a trader in the local fish market.

“The house is located in old city area and the approach is very narrow. Not even an autorickshaw can pass through the lane. This is making it even more difficult for us to reach the spot. We had to demolish walls of some of the nearby houses to begin rescue operations,” said JMC’s chief fire official K K Bishnoi.

According to fire officials, the house of Gandhara was under renovation for the last couple of days. “On Friday morning we got a call around 10.30am informing us about the collapse. But because of the narrow lane in Timba Faliya near Devubha Chowk, we were unable to reach the spot in time and rescue people. Efforts are on to rescue the man still buried under the rubble,” Bishnoi added.
