Two Maoists gunned down, 15 surrender in Bijapur

RAIPUR: Two Maoists were gunned down in an encounter, while fifteen Maoists, including a woman rebel with a bounty of Rs1 lakh on her head, surrendered before police in Bijapur district on Sunday.

Police said, the gunfight took place on Sunday morning at around 8am near the forests in Pamed area when a joint team of the special anti-Naxal Greyhounds unit of Telangana and Chhattisgarh police was out on an operation, based on intelligence inputs, along the interstate border.



The gun-battle broke out when the security forces were cordoning off the forest area at Pamed.

After the guns fell silent, police recovered bodies of the two ultras from the spot.

A few weapons were also recovered. More details are awaited as search operations were underway till the time of filing this report.

Chhattisgarh goes for third phase of elections on Tuesday.

Later in the day, fifteen Maoists, including a woman rebel with a bounty of Rs1 lakh on her head, surrendered before police in Bijapur district.

Bijapur superintendent of police, Gowardhan Thakur, said the Maoists were identified as Raju Wacham (25), Sukku Pallo (25), Ova Ram Wacham (45), Raju Ram Wacham (24), Rainu Wacham (33), Sukku Wacham (40), Banjaram Gota (35), Sukku Vacham (40), Budhri Telam (25), Mandi Telam (29), Vadde Shankar (27), Irpe Wacham (24), Jurri Pallo (25), Sunita Wacham (25) and Jimmo Wacham (25). Nine men and six women surrendered with weapons. The rebel with Rs1 lakh bounty was identified as Irpe Vacham.

She is the CNM commander, said police.

"The surrendered Maoists include five militia members, eight DAKMS members and one RPC member," said police.

Vacham and four other Maoists were responsible for causing damage to a police party on April 11.

All the surrendered rebels will be provided h facilities under the surrender and rehabilitation policy of state government. Rs10,000 each was given to them as an incentive, said police.
