Two persons arrested for selling drugs in city

Kochi: In a major drug haul in the city, two individuals who are allegedly part of a drug racket that targeted students and youth were arrested by excise on Wednesday. Excise officials seized 62.57g of white meth in powdered form, 3.30kg of ganja and 18 nitrazepam tablets from the duo.

Those arrested are Zakaria (32) alias Shenoy of Kasaragod and Amal Varghese (26) of Idukki.

The accused were nabbed by a joint team of state excise enforcement squad, Ernakulam excise intelligence bureau, and Ernakulam Town North circle.

According to excise officials, the accused were carrying out drug trade through a WhatsApp group called ‘Mad Max’ and provided doorstep delivery of drugs. The duo was nabbed from Chakkaraparambu when they were allegedly waiting to meet a potential client.

Excise officials also clarified that state excise enforcement squad led by excise commissioner. Chief assistant excise commissioner T Anilkumar has been monitoring history-sheeters in anticipation of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The officials also said key members of the racket are being put under surveillance and further arrests could be expected in the coming days.

Grade SI found dead:

K R Baburaj (46), a grade sub-inspector (SI) of Aluva East police station, was found hanging from a tree beside his residence at Puliyanam near Angamaly on Wednesday morning. He used to work with the crime branch but was recently transferred to Aluva East police station.

According to police officers, the stress stemming from the transfer which he struggled to accept could be the reason for the demise. Police have filed a case invoking Section 174 of CrPC for unnatural death.
