Udaipur landfill site set for big green makeover

UDAIPUR: The huge mound of garbage at the Titardi landfill , 10 km from the city, would no longer exist.


The Udaipur Smart City Limited and the Udaipur Municipal Corporation (UMC) has embarked on a project to replace the heap of smelly rubbish with a green cover. The cost of the project is pegged at Rs 4.96 crore and expected to be completed by May 27, 2019.

“We are working for the scientific closure of Titardi landfill site by partly moving the garbage and reorganizing it. Major work for compaction of garbage in multiple layers have been done and soon the site would be replaced by a green cover with orchards and trees for the public to have a breathing space,” CEO, zila parishad, Quamar Choudhary, who is supervising the project told TOI.

The municipal corporation generates about 150 tonne garbage per day. Presently, UMC does not have proper treatment and disposal facility. The total waste generated in Udaipur has been dumped at Titardi dumping ground. The dumping ground has a history of about 40 years and had almost reached the verge of spillover. Dumping was stopped after public protests in 2013. It is estimated that about 83,700 cum of garbage was dumped during this phase. The Titardi open solid waste dumpsite was posing a threat to the environment and human health.

It is proposed to reorganize the haphazardly dumped old garbage in layers and a final closure would be done.
