Umaria judge held captive, robbers decamp with Rs 500 cash

BHOPAL: Armed robbers barged into the house of a judge, kept him hostage and decamped with Rs 500 cash in Umaria district on Wednesday. The incident took place at the residence of the judge in Chapaha colony of the district, situated on Umaria-Shahdol road between 1.30 am and 2 am.

Special judge of NDPS Act Surendra Kumar lived in a house in Chapaha colony with only one peon at the house, as the sentry who was posted at his residence was on leave.

Umaria SP Sachin Sharma said, “There were around 3 to 4 armed men who barged into the house of the judge at around 1.30 am. They locked the door of the room in which the peon was sleeping. In the meantime, the judge Surendra Kumar woke up, after which the robbers tied him up in his room and searched every nook and corner of the house”.

Robbers left the house after which the judge untied himself and called police, Sharma said.

“They laid hands on just Rs 500 cash, as the judge does transaction only through plastic money. He had not kept any valuables at his house. We have constituted a special investigation team to investigate the matter,” Sharma said.
