Unauthorised commercial complex razed down in Chennai's Red Hills

CHENNAI: An unauthorised commercial complex , comprising a supermarket, on the GNT Road at Red Hills on the outskirts of Chennai was razed down on Wednesday.

The ground + one illegal structure was operating till two years ago on the arterial road.

According to official sources with the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), the unauthorised building was functioning in a built-up area of about 8,000 square foot on the ground and first floors.



"The landlord had appealed in the Supreme Court against an order by the Madras high court to pull down the structure, which was rejected. Following this, we commenced the demolition works from Wednesday morning," a CMDA official said.

While Naravarikuppam town panchayat is the executing agency to demolish the structure, the planning authority (CMDA) is coordinating it.

Last year, the high court rejected a plea against demolition of the commercial complex housing D R Super Market and Furniture Store. The building had been operating for more than a decade near the Red Hills bus terminus.
