Uncertainty over Bombay high court judge Akil Kureshi's Tripura move

NEW DELHI: It remains uncertain whether Bombay high court judge Akil Kureshi will move to Tripura high court as its chief justice. Three days after notifying Justice Kureshi’s appointment as chief justice of Tripura high court, the law ministry on Monday notified the appointment of Justice Subhasis Talapatra, a judge of Tripura high court, as its acting chief justice with effect from the date Justice Sanjay Karol relinquishes charge as chief justice upon his transfer as CJ of Patna high court.

Justice Karol was sworn in as CJ of Patna high court on Monday.

The government had notified Justice Kureshi’s name on Friday after convincing the Supreme Court collegium to withdraw his appointment as chief justice of Madhya Pradesh high court . Justice Kureshi has not yet expressed willingness or declined his appointment as chief justice of Tripura HC, leading to notification of the senior-most judge of the three-judge HC as acting chief justice.

Justice Kureshi, who was first appointed as judge of Gujarat HC in 2004, has a tenure as HC judge till 2022.
